The pay transparency majority
51% of the US workforce is covered by legislation as of January 1, 2023
Everyone is talking about SB1162, the California bill signed into law last month adding strengthened salary range disclosure requirements that goes into effect next year.
Laws in New York City and Washington go into effect soon, too. In fact, state and local governments in 27 states now have some form of pay transparency legislation in place.
The complexity is growing quickly - how will you manage it? Should you just rip the bandaid and go as California goes?
The new majority
I was curious how many workers are covered under pay transparency legislation now.
Using this US Bureau of Labor Statistics dataset (with some adjustments for municipal-only laws) and Compa’s legislation tracker, I estimate 84 million workers will be covered by pay transparency legislation as of January 1, 2023.
84 million workers represents 51% of the overall US workforce.
This means that when we wake up on New Year’s Day in 2023, a majority of the US workforce is covered by some form of pay transparency legislation.
The world has changed.
I’d say we’re not in Kansas anymore, but Kansas City has a salary history ban, too… just on the Missouri side.
